What is the minimum TOEFL or IELTS score?
English Language Proficiency for Undergraduate Admission
Generally, if your first language is not English, you must submit adequate TOEFL or IELTS results before an application can be considered for admission to WVU. Minimum scores required for undergraduate admission are:
- TOEFL Internet-based = 61
- TOEFL Paper-based = 500
- IELTS = 6.0

In some cases, we may consider applicants who lack adequate TOEFL or IELTS scores. You must first enroll in the Intensive English Program before beginning your academic program. If you wish to be considered for this program, you must notify the Office of Admissions when you submit your application.

Students from English-Speaking Countries
If you are a citizen of one of the following countries, you do not have to submit a test score for English proficiency: Australia, Canada, Republic of Ireland, New Zealand, United Kingdom, United States, Commonwealth Caribbean Countries (Anguilla, Antigua, The Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, British Virgin Islands, Bermuda, Cayman Islands, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, Montserrat, St Kitts and Nevis, St Lucia, St Vincent, Trinidad and Tobago, Turks and Caicos).
Otherwise, you will need to submit one of the accepted English language proficiency options.
