Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between in-state and out-of-state residency?

Residency

Students who are legal residents of West Virginia pay “resident” tuition at WVU. Students who are residents of other states and nations pay “non-resident” tuition. We determine your residency by the information you provide on your admissions application.

To learn what is required to establish West Virginia residency, see the Board of Governors Academics Rule 2.4 - Residency Status for Admission, Tuition, and Fee Purposes.

Reduced Tuition Programs

Some out-of-state students may qualify for in-state tuition through our reduced tuition programs for Ohio and Garrett College.
