Frequently Asked Questions

Are new students required to live in residence halls?

WVU has a first-year live-on requirement. All single, first-year students and transfer students with fewer than 24 transferable credits taken after high school graduation are required to live in residence halls for their first year at WVU.

Students may register for an exemption if living with their parents or guardians in the following contiguous counties:

  • West Virginia: Harrison, Marion, Monongalia, Preston, Taylor, and Wetzel
  • Pennsylvania: Fayette and Greene

Commuters must reside at the permanent address on file and reside with their parent(s) or legal guardian(s).
