Position Description
Orientation Leaders (OLs) will represent WVU at New Student Orientation throughout the summer months, mainly during May and June. OLs assist prospective students and their families during day-long orientation sessions by sharing information about resources and services on campus, providing excellent customer service, and showcasing the WVU campus and its community.
OLs will participate in various tasks throughout each day including, but not limited to:
- Welcoming participants
- Talking with students 1-on-1
- Answering questions about the University
- Leading group discussions and activities, providing outreach to students via phone communication, etc.
OLs should be knowledgeable and enthusiastic about WVU, and have excellent communication skills and a customer service-oriented attitude.
Job Qualifications
- Familiarity with the University and its programs and services
- Possess good communication skills, adaptability, leadership experience, and have a desire to help incoming students succeed
- Responsibility, reliability, confidence, and self-motivation
- Customer service-oriented attitude
- Analytical skills with ability to make sound decisions under pressure
- Full-time student (not graduating before December 2026)
- Minimum 2.75 GPA
Conditions of Employment
OLs will be contracted to work 7 a.m.–5 p.m. on all NSO dates.
NOTE: This does not mean that you will work these hours every day, but you should not plan for anything else during these hours pending your assigned schedule.
OLs will be expected to work all open house events (Discover and Decide WVU) from the point of hire forward. These dates will be given to you well in advance. In addition to the Open House Events, OLs must also sign-up to work 1 other University event/opportunity at the discretion of the orientation staff — examples of this would be Welcome Week, Distinguished Scholars, and Junior Open House.
Other event opportunities are available, as well as the possibility to work a regular weekly schedule throughout the year in the Office of Admissions.
OLs must complete and attend all training sessions.
OLs cannot take summer classes in-person during the first summer session.
