Family Guide
Know Your Timeline
We know this can be a stressful time for families. Getting items checked off your to-do list is crucial, and we want to make sure you have everything completed before August move-in. Review the new student timeline and steps for first-time freshmen so you’ll never miss a deadline.
Admitted Student Booklet
This admitted student booklet is your go-to resource for preparing for your student’s first semester. It includes a helpful checklist (and lots more) to keep you on track. Download it here or watch for the printed version in your mail.
Test Optional
Did you know that WVU is test-optional? And the best part? We don’t penalize a student who decides to go test-optional. Better yet, we offer scholarships to students who apply test-optional. Visit these pages to learn more about test-optional.
Next Steps
Your student’s to-do list to prep for their first semester.
Pay the Academic Deposit
This step unlocks your student’s future as a Mountaineer. The academic deposit is $150 for West Virginia residents and $250 for all other students. Pay the academic deposit now to secure your student’s place in our incoming class.
Complete the Housing Application
Your student’s been admitted, and now it’s time to explore where to live. Did you know we have 12 residence halls on campus? Take a virtual tour of our residence halls, pay the housing deposit, and choose your student’s next home away from home.
Grant Access to Parent/Guest Portal
Your student can use the WVU Parent/Guest Portal to grant you permission to access their student records, such as grades and financial aid.
Academics
We’ll help your student find their purpose and a path to get there.

Academic Advising
Your student must meet with an adviser each semester to register for classes. Incoming students will talk with an adviser virtually as part of New Student Orientation before their first semester.

Grades
At the end of every term, grades are posted on your student’s official transcript. You can view your student’s grades via the WVU Parent and Guest Portal if your student has granted you permission. Midterm grades are also posted during the eighth week of the semester, though these grades are not permanent.

Tutoring
If your student is having difficulty with a class, they can get help — at no charge. We offer drop-in tutoring and tutoring by appointment, as well as student success coaches, mentoring, and seminars to develop skills like note-taking and test-taking.
