ALEKS Math Assessment

Math placement is required for some new students. The ALEKS assessment is 1 way you can acquire math placement. Use this page to determine if you need math placement and how you could benefit from taking ALEKS.

What is ALEKS?

ALEKS (Assessment and Learning in Knowledge Spaces) is a testing platform used to measure your mathematical knowledge.

Developed by McGraw Hill, ALEKS is an adaptive test with advanced AI technology. Each question tests multiple objectives and problem-solving capabilities.

There is no additional fee associated with ALEKS.

If you’re required to take ALEKS, you should complete the assessment by the April 15 priority deadline to ensure the best course schedule in your major.

Why ALEKS matters

Accurate math placement is critical for your success. Math courses are demanding and often required before other courses in your major.

Taking ALEKS seriously can help you:

  • Shorten your timeline to graduation by placing into the right course.
  • Start your major coursework sooner.
  • Avoid repeating material you already know.
  • Build a strong foundation for success in your major.

Before you dive into the assessment, take time to brush up on your math skills and review the Algebra concepts you learned in high school.

Your ALEKS score will not impact your acceptance to WVU, acceptance to the Honors College, or merit scholarships.

Do you need to take ALEKS?

  • ALEKS is required if:

    1. You applied test-optional AND
    2. You DO NOT have other placement indicators ON FILE (ACT, SAT, or Advanced Placement Calculus scores, or a dual enrollment math course) AND
    3. Your intended major requires Algebra 2 or beyond. Check the majors list.

If you have ACT or SAT scores, you can submit your scores instead of taking ALEKS.

  • ALEKS is optional if:

    1. You already have ACT, SAT, or AP Calculus scores or a dual enrollment math course on file.
    2. You want to challenge your current math placement. Find your current placement.

  • Accessibility

High school IEP and 504 plans do not apply to ALEKS testing. You register for accommodations with the Office of Student Accommodations.

Priority Deadline: April 15

If your major requires math placement, take ALEKS or submit test scores by April 15 to receive the best class schedule for your major.

How to take ALEKS

Steps to Complete

    1. If you haven’t already done so, set up your WVU Portal. Then watch a video for an introduction to ALEKS. Learn what students and parents can expect from the assessment.
    2. Login to eCampus to access the 2026 ALEKS Placement course in eCampus. You can access eCampus through either portal.wvu.edu or ecampus.wvu.edu by using your WVU login information.
    3. Complete your PROCTORED attempt. This means you’re on camera and using the Respondus LockDown Browser.
    4. After completing your proctored attempt, your score will be recorded to the system. You will discuss this score along with many other things during your advising appointment as a part of New Student Orientation.

You have 2 attempts. If you’re not satisfied with your first score, you can complete the remediation modules and try again.
