Enroll as a First-time Freshman
You're admitted! Follow the steps below to become a Mountaineer.
Steps to Enrollment
WVU First-time Freshmen
1. Log in to the WVU Portal
The WVU Portal is your gateway to online resources at WVU, including many required to complete your enrollment steps.
To log in to the WVU Portal, you must first use Okta to activate your WVU Login. Okta activation instructions will be emailed within 2 hours of your WVU acceptance message. Always use the most recent activation email if you receive more than 1. Activation links expire after 90 days.
Pro Tip: The WVU Portal is not the MyWVU application dashboard portal. The MyWVU portal is your dashboard related to the admissions application, including requests like changing your major or term, or canceling your WVU attendance.
2. Pay the Academic Deposit
The academic deposit reserves your place in our incoming class and is required to move forward with housing, math placement, and New Student Orientation.
Your academic deposit is fully refundable if you cancel your WVU attendance before May 1 for fall term enrollment and December 1 for spring term enrollment.
Pro Tip: You must log into your MyWVU application dashboard to submit the withdraw request to cancel your WVU attendance.
3. Submit the FAFSA
Our FAFSA priority deadline is March 1. We encourage all students to submit the FAFSA. Our school code is 003827. The FAFSA is required for Federal and State aid programs, and to qualify for the Promise Scholarship for West Virginia residents.
Pro Tip: The State of West Virginia’s deadline to submit the FAFSA for Promise is also March 1.
4. Apply for Housing
Admitted students with a paid academic deposit are eligible to pay the housing deposit and complete the application. First-time freshmen are required to live on campus their first year. Students who are eligible for a housing exemption must complete the housing application. Learn more about the First-Year Live On Requirements (FYLOR).
5. Choose a Dining Plan
Everyone living in campus housing is required to purchase an on-campus student dining plan. Commuters have the option of purchasing an off-campus student plan. You’re required to complete your housing application, even if you’re requesting a housing exemption, before choosing a dining plan.
6. Take ALEKS Math Assessment
Math placement is required for some new students. The ALEKS online math assessment is 1 way you can acquire math placement by the April 15 priority deadline.
7. Accept or Decline Aid
Check your MIX email for messages from the WVU Hub about financial aid next steps. If you receive an offer, you can review, accept or decline aid through the WVU Portal. Acceptance of scholarships and aid doesn’t mean you’re required to attend WVU (but you forfeit your award if you cancel your application or attendance).
8. Complete New Student Orientation
All first-time freshmen are required to complete NSO, which includes online modules, a virtual advising appointment, and an on-campus program. You must pay your academic deposit before registering.
9. Complete Health Insurance Waiver
All students enrolling in 6 or more credits are required to have health insurance coverage. You will be billed for the WVU student health insurance plan unless you opt out by completing the student health insurance waiver in June, just before the fall start.
10. Pay Your Bill
Fall semester charges will be available in WVU MyAccount (via WVU Portal) in early July. If you owe a balance, you will receive a billing notification in your MIX email. Payment is due August 1.
Tuition payment plans are available to break up your semester’s tuition and fees into smaller, more manageable installments.
11. Move-in
Move-in information for fall 2026 is released in June. Watch your MIX email for additional information. There will be specific days and time slots for move-in to help alleviate overcrowding in the halls.

Apply for Promise
The Promise Scholarship for West Virginia residents is sponsored by the state of West Virginia. To be considered, you must submit the Promise application and the FAFSA by March 1.
