Sport Analytics and Performance, Undergraduate Certificate

The Undergraduate Certificate in Sport Analytics and Performance gives students early, hands-on access to the rapidly growing field of sport science and applied performance analytics.

Ideal for students interested in coaching, sport management, sport science, athletic training, or data-driven performance roles, the program blends foundational coursework in statistics and sport data analysis with an immersive, year-long residency in the WVU Baseball Biomechanics and Performance Center.

Through direct involvement in a Division I Power 4 performance environment, students learn how to operate cutting-edge technology, support live data collection sessions, interpret biomechanics and performance outputs, and collaborate with coaches and staff to improve athlete development. This program positions students for entry‑level roles in sport analytics and performance settings while also preparing them for graduate study in sport science, coaching, analytics, or related fields.

Get hands-on experience with sport analytics inside WVU’s Division I biomechanics and performance center, starting as an undergraduate.

The 12‑credit certificate combines 2 classroom-based courses in statistics and sport data analysis with 2 immersive residencies that take place inside the WVU Baseball Biomechanics and Performance Center.

Courses include:

  • STAT 111 Understanding Statistics (3 credits), STAT 211 Elementary Statistical Inference, or EDUC 232 Data Literacy Strategies and Apps: Build foundational knowledge in descriptive and inferential statistics, including sampling, regression, correlation, and hypothesis testing.
  • SPSC 457 Sport Science Data Analysis (3 credits): Learn practical analytical skills used to interpret athlete performance data and inform evidence-based decision-making.
  • SPSC 458 Sport Analytics and Performance Residency I (3 credits): Gain hands-on experience with core sport performance technologies such as Trackman and Swing Catalyst. Students assist with technology setup, calibration, video capture, and basic workflow management during live baseball sessions.
  • SPSC 459 Sport Analytics and Performance Residency II (3 credits): Advance your ability to interpret biomechanics and performance data from technologies such as KinaTrax, NewtForce, and Swing Catalyst. Students support individualized player development plans, complete case studies, and contribute to applied projects.

Experiential learning is the heart of this certificate. Students are fully embedded in the WVU Baseball Biomechanics and Performance Center, gaining hands-on experience not typically available to undergraduates.

Through the 2-semester residency, students will:

  • Learn to operate performance technologies used in Power 4 and professional baseball.
  • Participate in daily practice-based workflows and live data capture sessions.
  • Assist with technology setup, calibration, and quality assurance.
  • Interpret fundamental biomechanics reports and link findings to performance outcomes.
  • Work alongside biomechanics staff, coaches, and sport scientists in an authentic applied environment.
  • Explore career pathways in sport analytics and performance through guided mentorship.

You must meet the following requirements:

  • Be enrolled in, or have completed, a bachelor’s degree program at WVU or another accredited institution.
  • Hold a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75.
  • Submit a résumé and personal statement outlining relevant experience and goals.
  • Complete an admission interview with program faculty to assess readiness, professionalism, and suitability for the applied residency experience.

Admission to the Undergraduate Certificate in Sport Analytics and Performance is selective and designed to ensure students are prepared for hands‑on work in a Division I performance environment.
