Industrial Engineering, BSIE

Industrial and management systems engineers focus on improving performance for an entire system, including productivity, quality, cost, safety, sustainability, employee health, and market enhancement. They can be found in manufacturing, healthcare, logistics and distribution, retail environments, government agencies, financial institutions, and virtually any product or service that has complex processes.
Industrial engineers balance inputs to achieve the greatest good for the organization and society with the right combination of human resources, natural resources, and man-made structures and equipment. Professionals in this field bridge the gap between management and operations, motivating people in addition to determining what equipment, information, etc., should be used and how.

Your Degree Plan

Industrial engineers are often thought of as “efficiency experts” for reducing costs and increasing throughput in a manufacturing setting. You’ll also find them in sales, hospitals, warehousing, distribution, construction, finance, retail, and virtually any organization.
Take advantage of special options related to this major:

Accelerated BSIE/MSIE in Industrial Engineering

Industrial Engineering offers the option to earn a bachelor’s and master’s degree in an accelerated time frame.

Honors

Expand your curiosity and enhance your curriculum through the WVU Honors College. Two programs are offered: Honors Foundations and Honors in Action.

The WVU Difference

What sets this program apart?

  • Opportunities to attend regional and national industrial engineering conferences at a reduced rate based on departmental and external funding.
  • The Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering program is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET.
  • Study abroad encouraged and facilitated through active advising and a peer mentoring program.
  • Smart Manufacturing Facility for experimentation of smart, connected manufacturing and simulated workstations.
  • The Innovation Station, an advanced manufacturing laboratory that allows digital models of prototypes to be cut, cast, machined, etched, and measured.
  • Required internship program provides industrial experience.
  • Concentrations include manufacturing, management, and optimization.
  • Department maintains close relationships with local companies.

Learn by Doing

Get involved outside the classroom.

Students are encouraged to conduct research with Industrial Engineering faculty and in research facilities. Projects have included:

  • Designing ergonomic assists for the development of a novel in-vivo PET-scan helmet to model brain function
  • Modeling the energy efficiency of dryer systems for compressed air
  • Modeling health systems, perioperative information and processes from the vantage of a complex supply chain network
  • Using myoelectric muscle stimulation to determine acceptable lifting loads for lower back and shoulder movements
  • The interaction of the Microsoft Holo Lens for VR immersion in a smart manufacturing environment

Before graduating, all undergraduates in this major complete an academic project (or “capstone”) to demonstrate their research, communication and critical thinking skills.

IENG 471 requires every graduating senior to participate in some type of summer internship or semester co-op experience. Projects have included:

  • Energy assessment for the City of Morgantown.
  • Quality control and root cause analysis of flour loss at a commercial bakery.
  • Study of allowable loads permissible on muscle groups associated with shoulder movements.
