
Health Informatics and Information Management, BS
Our program prepares qualified professionals who are committed to improving health and transforming healthcare and who demonstrate respect, excellence, leadership, and integrity. You will receive training in distinct but complementary areas: informatics, data analytics, privacy, risk and compliance, data quality, revenue cycle management, and more.
You will also be trained in the operations and workflow of a variety of healthcare organizations, from large healthcare systems to physician practices of all sizes, from health centers and clinics to skilled and long-term care facilities.

Principles of Health Informatics and Information Management Quality Management

A survey of quality measures, techniques, and theories including utilization review, risk management, patient outcomes, and medical staff credentialing.
Fundamentals of Clinical Documentation Improvement

A study of clinical documentation improvement practices and the management of the clinical documentation process.

A study of healthcare registry management and the operational components of registries. Registry types and registry policy are included.
Healthcare Data Privacy, Confidentiality, and Security

Fundamentals of consumer privacy, confidentiality, and security. Provides an in-depth study of patient verification and identity management, E-discovery, data security, mobile device security, disaster recovery, and principles related to the release of personal health information.
Health Informatics and Information Management Legal Issues

Study of the U.S. legal structure and legal theories that apply to health information practice and the electronic record environment. Study and application of the essentials of compliance and fraud surveillance.

- WVU HIIM is the only BS program of its kind in West Virginia.
- Typically, students complete 400 hours of professional practice experience over the 4-year program, which ensures they graduate well-prepared to transition directly into the workforce.
- Non-traditional students who already have significant experience in the workforce or who hold certification relevant to HIIM can submit a professional portfolio which, after review, may reduce the total number of PPE hours needed.
- Students benefit from the program’s close relationship with the WVU Medicine system, with many completing PPE hours and eventually launching their post-baccalaureate careers within the system.
- As part of the WVU Health Sciences Center, you’ll enjoy invaluable opportunities for learning how to partner effectively with nursing, medicine, pharmacy, dentistry, public health, and allied health professionals-in-training.

- Our students experience state-of-the-art healthcare applications currently in use in the working world by learning on the internet-based V-Lab, developed by the American Health Information Management Association. You will gain résumé-worthy experience in master patient indexes, electronic health records, encoders, and more.
- Through the required capstone course and multiple professional practice experience courses, you can customize research and workplace experiences that align with your long-term academic and career goals.
